Over half of drug labs discovered are on rental properties, and the owners are responsible for the decontamination costs. Protect yourself from medical liability before your next tenant arrives. Drug residue is not always visible to the eye, but if you see evidence or suspect that a previous guest or tenant produced or smoked methamphetamine inside your building, it should be tested and cleaned according to state regulations. The invisible substance clings to walls, furniture, carpets, and air ducts. It can remain on soft surfaces like carpet or upholstery for years. Cooking and using meth produces a chemical smell like urine, rotten eggs, fuel, paint thinner.
One time drug use by smoking will require cleanup. Prolonged smoked meth or fentanyl residue is just as hazardous as cooking to occupants and guests, and especially to those with existing health issues, the elderly, children, and pets. Residents can be exposed through inhalation, absorption through skin, or ingestion.
Properties that are found to have actionable level of conamination will need to be decontaminated by a CDL certified professional, experienced and knowledgeable in Clandestine Drug Lab cleanups, who are also OSHA/EPA compliant. After decontamination, and re-testing for residue, a property owner must have a Certificate of Fitness by the State of Oregon, before the building can be reoccupied. More information >
