Contamination of Homes, Vacation Rentals, Hotel rooms, Storage units, RV's, and Vehicles with methamphetamine and fentanyl have risen significantly.
Guidelines identifying unhabitable levels of methamphetamine contamination that require remediation vary by state. Most of the time, however, rental owners, property management, hotels, and RV owners, clean the property themselves "without" using state guidelines.
The new residents or buyers are unaware of the previous activities. The contaminated flooring, furnishings, and wall interior cause subsequent exposure through dermal absorption and inhalation. Occupants often investigate other environmental factors causing their health symptoms, such as mold, pests, vermin, allergies, and contaminated water.

It is estimated that for every one pound of methamphetamine produced, there are five to six pounds of toxic waste created and dumped in public places and sewer systems.

Do you suspect someone smoked or cooked meth in your property? Test for drug residue to find out what cleaning or remediation methods are needed. The invisible airborne residues and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can settle on surfaces, such as flooring, fabrics, furnishings, and walls, where they can then be transported throughout the premises via air or dermal transfer. The contaminant comes from aerosols created in both smoking and the manufacturing. Guests can be exposed through inhalation, absorption through skin, or ingestion.

Protect your health and pocketbook, test before you sign. Owners have the option to sell a contaminated property "as is" with full written disclosure under ORS 453.870. While testing for drug residue is not required by the seller, the buyer may have the right to demand a certified test for meth before a sale closes. If methamphetamine is found above the state implemented threshold, then the seller is required to decontaminate the property before it can be sold. Buying a property and then testing it after the purchase is finalized can leave the buyer with an expensive remediation and risk to the occupants health.

Over half of drug labs discovered are on rental properties, and the owners are responsible for the decontamination costs. Property owners and managers can avoid liability by testing their rental for drug residue if they suspect any meth or fentanly activity. Basic cleaning methods are not sufficient. The structure should not be reoccupied until after decontamination or remediation is complete and residue sampling and air monitoring. The sample must be taken by a trained, non-biased professional so that the extraction and analysis is not impeded at the laboratory.

The second-hand health hazards are similar to those who use meth and fentanyl. Babies and pets, can be especially at risk with their close contact to the floor. The most reported symptom is respiratory irritation with cough and asthma-like symptoms. Meth Residue Symptoms can include behavioural changes, respiratory illnesses and skin rashes, irritability, anxiety, sleeplessness, weight loss, a persistent cough, dizziness, difficulty in breathing, nausea and throat, sore and watery eyes, cancer, organ damage.
